your newborn session guide

A few things to help you feel prepared and at ease before we meet.

Here's everything you need to know.

01

when to book

Typically, newborn photos are done within the first 3–5 weeks — this ensures your baby is still that small, beautiful being who just arrived. That said, if you'd like to wait a little longer, that's completely up to you and the stage you want to remember.

02

Lighting & time of day

For in-home sessions, natural light makes a big difference. If we haven't already discussed a time, take note of when your living room, bedroom, or nursery gets the best light during the day — that's when we'll want to shoot. If we do have a time scheduled, let's revisit it to make sure it lines up with the best light in your home.

03

What to wear

I suggest choosing 2–3 colours and coordinating your outfits so everything looks cohesive. I like to think of it as the clothes adding to the photos without taking attention away from you and your family. Beyond that, dress in whatever feels natural to you.

04

Before I arrive

Try to have your baby fed and freshly changed right before the session. A full, comfortable baby makes for a much smoother (and happier!) shoot.

05

Following baby's lead

Babies run on their own schedule, so we'll take everything at their pace without no rushing or forcing anything. If baby is happy, we shoot; if baby needs a moment, we pause. If baby starts crying, I'll give you time to soothe him/her (and chances are you'd rather not have those shots anyway!). One thing to keep in mind throughout: always support baby’s neck when you're holding or positioning him/her.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Sessions are about an hour, though I always schedule an hour and a half just in case your baby needs a little extra time to settle.

  • Absolutely! I like to bring them in closer to the halfway mark — once I feel like we've captured some good moments with just the baby, we'll move on to the whole family.

  • Both! In-home is the default, but studio sessions are absolutely an option. Just let me know if you're interested and I can share studio recommendations and any additional costs.

  • My style leans natural and lifestyle-focused, so the best props are the ones already part of your everyday life — a favourite blanket, a little basket, anything that feels like home.

  • Of course! If your baby is under the weather or the timing just isn't working, you can reschedule directly through the confirmation email you received when you booked.

  • Typically within 2–4 weeks, though turnaround time can vary depending on the time of year.

  • You'll receive an email with a link to your own private online gallery where you can view and download your photos.

  • Yes! Your gallery comes with an attached print shop where you can easily browse print sizes, place your order, and have everything shipped straight to your door. Further pricing and instructions will be available within the print shop.

Take your time. I will too.

Whether you're reading this with your newborn already in your arms or still waiting for their arrival, my hope is that these photos capture the precious beginning moments of this time. I want these photos to be just as sweet as you do — and for that reason, these sessions tend to be slow and intentional. Let's not rush this first time you have family photos together.
