your Family session guide

A few things to help you feel prepared and at ease before we meet.

Here's everything you need to know.

01

What to wear

I suggest choosing 2 or 3 colours and coordinating your outfits so everything looks cohesive. I like to think of it as the clothes adding to the photos without taking attention away from you and your family. One thing I do ask is to not wear any logos, neon colours, or busy patterned clothing. Beyond that, dress in whatever feels natural to you.

02

What to expect

I like to photograph family sessions as if I were an auntie joining the fam for the usual afternoon activities. This allows everyone to feel like they don't need to perform or change for the camera. The sweetest things from this season are the way everyone acts naturally, and the connection that comes from time spent together. I'll give suggestions here and there, but otherwise we'll let the kids play, and when there's a good moment, I'll invite everyone to look at the camera. Let's all go into this session with a "go with the flow" kind of expectation.

04

Following baby's lead

Babies run on their own schedule, so we'll take everything at their pace without no rushing or forcing anything. If baby is happy, we shoot; if baby needs a moment, we pause. If baby starts crying, I'll give you time to soothe him/her (and chances are you'd rather not have those shots anyway!). One thing to keep in mind throughout: always support baby’s neck when you're holding or positioning him/her.

How to prepare

If we're having an in-home session, please have the space tidy. Beyond that, it's always good to have snacks on hand, and tell the kids we'll be hanging out and I'll be taking pictures. Let's frame this time together as hanging out, with the camera being an addition, in hopes that it allows everyone to not feel the pressure of being in front of the camera, but instead enjoy time together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take your time. I will too.

Whether you're reading this with your newborn already in your arms or still waiting for their arrival, my hope is that these photos capture the precious beginning moments of this time. I want these photos to be just as sweet as you do — and for that reason, these sessions tend to be slow and intentional. Let's not rush this first time you have family photos together.
